About This Project
Rachel Mohr wanted to research national identity and integration of the Baltic Russian diaspora because she was interested in Russia’s policy to retain influence over its ethnically Russian “compatriots” in the region. She synthesized current survey data together to analyze levels of identification with the Baltic states among Baltic Russians. Rachel Mohr concluded that Baltic integration has largely resulted in strong national identities among Baltic Russians, but Russia continues to dominate their cultural identities and a consolidated political identity is lacking. This could give Russia an opportunity to threaten integration by co-opting its compatriots abroad.
